      Read an Excerpt. CHAPTER 1. JATAKA TALES. The tales which follow are from the Jataka Book, a work of mixed verse and prose relating the states of existence, as animal or human, of the Buddha prior to his final birth as Gautama. The Jataka Book was originally in verse alone, to which the reciter, in the oral tradition of the time, added explanation. Introduction: The Dipavamsa. A comparative study. The Dipavamsa, the earliest extant chronicle of Sri Lanka, of unknown authorship, deals with the history of the island from earliest times up to the reign of Mahasena ().
